Hakuba Karate Dojo

About Us

Rei = Respect

At Hakuba Dojo we value traditional dojo etiquette.

We strongly believe in and practice our Dojo-kun (Dojo Rules). Showing respect and supporting fellow students is a vital part of learning Karate.

Kihon = Basic technique

We have a strong emphasis on ‘kihon waza’ basic technique. It’s our belief that everything good in our karate comes from a solid foundation.

Kumite = Sparring

Kumite offers our students the benefits of expressing their own Wado techniques in a safe and controlled manner.

Good Kumite should include a wide selection of Wado technique and movement where the student can hone their karate skills.

Kata

Kata training is an essential part of Wadoryu Karate

Kata are predefined, specific patterns of movement that incorporate and encapsulate martial techniques, concepts, and applications.

Hakuba Dojo

‘Hakuba’ loosely translated from Japanese means ‘White Horse’. Chosen to reflect the local Wiltshire landscape where many of the hills have ancient chalk white horses engraved into the downs.

We provide a safe, non-intimidating environment for all to train.

Anyone wishing to give it a go will receive a warm and friendly welcome.

Wadoryu Karate

The style of karate is purely based on the teachings of Grandmaster Hironori Otsuka Meijin (1892-1982).

At Hakuba Karate we do not change anything to ‘modernise’ the system, preferring only to continue to train and teach the traditional Japanese way; the correct way for Wadoryu.

Wadoryu is the style of karate.

‘Wa’ = Peace

‘Do’ = Way

‘Ryu’ = School

Wadoryu = Way of peace school.

Wadoryu lends itself to all ages (8+) due to its focus on speed of technique rather than muscular power. It’s a wonderful method of keeping your whole body moving, very good for your health and vitality
